Offered in partnership with ECMC, the University at Buffalo Emergency Medicine Residency Program provides both experiential and didactic training for individuals looking to have a medical career in emergency medicine. Upon completion of our program, emergency medicine residents are equipped to treat emergent patients in any type of setting.

The didactic portion of the program focuses on the basic knowledge necessary for the practice of emergency medicine. Program components include:

• A weekly core lecture series designed to cover all major topics in emergency medicine twice in three years and the minor areas at least once
• A series of lectures, which provides an introduction to research in emergency medicine, is also repeated on a three-year cycle
• Attending-led weekly study sessions
• A monthly journal club structured to train residents in the skills needed to practice evidence-based medicine
• Additional special training sessions, such as:
  • Cadaver labs
  • Hazmat training
  • Air-medical care
  • Emergency vehicle operations
• Also, residents will participate in rotations outside the emergency department to complement their training, including experiences in intensive care and toxicology.

Residents can also explore areas of special interest through electives.
