Trauma Care
Verified as a Level 1 Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons, and designated a Level 1 Adult Trauma Center by the NYS Department of Health, ECMC treats thousands of patients from all eight counties of Western New York each year. We serve as a leader in establishing national trauma care standards, participating in national and regional quality improvement programs for trauma, as well as injury prevention and trauma education programs across Western New York.
As one of the first trauma centers in the country, ECMC has long been a leader in the treatment of victims with traumatic injuries. Through our research, ECMC’s physicians have pioneered trauma care methods that are considered the standard of care today. We are proud to offer our community a regional destination for trauma care, especially considering that research has shown significantly better survival rates for patients treated at a trauma center versus a non-trauma center.
ECMC’s Level 1 Adult Trauma Center delivers unparalleled expertise to patients with resources, including state-of-the-art technology and equipment, all available 24 hours a day, seven days a week:
- Trauma resuscitation rooms
- F.A.S.T scans for intra-abdominal and thoracic injury assessment
- Designated operative suites
- Interventional radiology
- CAT scans
- Angiography
- MRI
- Rooftop helipad offering direct access to the Emergency Department
- Dedicated Trauma Elevator to expedite transfer to the Operating Room
Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation care begins in the early phases of treatment with bedside physical, occupational, and speech therapy. Patients then transition to acute rehabilitative care, if needed, in our CARF-certified unit (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities). Additionally, physicians and nurses from our trauma team are affiliated with the State University of New York at Buffalo and regularly participate in research projects to improve trauma care.
Injury Prevention & Trauma Education
Our trauma center offers injury prevention and trauma education programs throughout Western New York. Injury prevention topics include both a school-based and hospital-based Let’s Not Meet By Accident program (distracted and impaired driving), fall prevention, and violence intervention. We also offer trauma-specific educational programs for pre-hospital, nursing, and physician providers. Advanced Trauma Life Support and Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses are also offered on-site.
