Pre-Kidney Transplant Surgery

If you live outside of New York State, you can be on ECMC’s kidney donation waiting list and stay on the list in your hometown, too. This gives you more opportunities to receive organ donation offers. 

To be placed on ECMC’s waitlist, you need to be actively listed in your home center and supply us with your medical records and a letter of support from your nephrologist. 

We will then schedule a date for you to come to ECMC for a full day of education, testing, and meeting with the kidney transplant team. If all your tests are acceptable, it takes just a few weeks to be added to the list.

Post-Kidney Transplant Surgery

After transplantation, you will be required to stay in our local area (Buffalo, NY) for one to three months, depending on how quickly you recover. ECMC will provide you with information on how best to achieve this through local housing/hotel accommodations. Once you have recovered, your local nephrologist will see you regularly, and you will come to see us again six months after your kidney transplant and then once yearly.
