Special Needs Dentistry
The Erie County Medical Center Special Needs Dentistry Program cares for individuals who have difficulty cooperating for traditional dental care. We welcome individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities, history of stroke or traumatic brain injury, dementia among many other complex medical conditions. Our goals are to provide dental care to all individuals, regardless of their abilities, and to assist their caregivers in providing routine dental hygiene at home.
We offer dental treatment in both traditional ambulatory clinic setting, and full mouth dental rehabilitation under general anesthesia in the operating room when indicated.
Our doctors, staff, and residents are ready to meet the unique needs of this special population. Please call (716) 218-7399 for an appointment.
Caring for someone else’s teeth can be difficult. Our team would love to meet with you to discuss ways to make home hygiene easier. You may want to try:
- Toothbrushing somewhere other than standing at the sink. Consider in the tub/shower, while watching TV, while playing a game
- Using various hygiene aides such as mouth props, bite blocks, electric toothbrushes, 3-sided toothbrushes, floss picks/handles
- Positioning: stabilizing, lay down
- Asking for help from a family member, friend, or staff member
