Our Pathway to Excellence document has been accepted by the ANCC and it is time to say we strongly agree that we are a Pathway Organization!

The Pathway to Excellence Nursing Survey will open on May 7 at 9am and end May 28 at 12 midnight.

All RNs and LPNs are eligible and encouraged to take the survey, including CRNAs and NPs that are hired through ECMC.

The following conference rooms will be available and set up for you to take the survey.  Hemodialysis conference room (RO-063), Non-invasive cardiology conference room (156-1A), Orthopedic education room in the tower (685), Emergency room conference room (GR-415), CPEP conference room (175).  There will also be icons on desktops throughout the nursing care areas.

The ECMC Nursing Department received our original Pathway to Excellence Designation in January 2020.  You all strongly agreed that ECMC Nursing promotes nursing excellence and quality patient outcomes while providing safe, positive work environments.

Thank you Nurses for all you do clinically and compassionately for the benefit of our patients!

The Mission of Pathway to Excellence

Pathway to Excellence guides the positive transformation of practice environments in multiple settings to build global community healthcare organizations committed to nursing workplace excellence.

ECMC Mission

To provide every patient the highest quality of care delivered with compassion.

ECMC Nursing Mission

We, the community of nurses, support the mission of the Erie County Medical Center through our intentional presence in all we do. We demonstrate excellence in clinical care by our commitment to evidence-based practice, and delivering culturally competent patient care in a caring, healing environment. We promote innovation in clinical practice, programs and technology through active participation in shared decision making and research. We provide a compassionate and respectful environment for all members of our community through our Professional Practice Model, patient- and family-centered care.

How do we begin our Journey to Excellence?

Pathway to Excellence is an evolving process that roadmaps opportunities to enhance Nursing recruitment and retention, nursing autonomy and satisfaction, interdisciplinary collaboration, strategic focus, team engagement, ownership, and accountability, well-being, and community presence/awareness. This enhances nursing culture and innovates nursing beyond its historical foundation.

What are the Elements of Performance?

Pathway to Excellence encompasses six Elements of Performance (EOP).

1. Shared Decision making

Our Nursing Department has many forms of shared decision making: Practice Council, Leadership Meetings, Retention Council, Nursing Standards. Our nurses have input in developing and bringing evidence based, best practices into their practice. There have been many projects taken on by our staff that improved overall patient care and nursing practice.

3. Safety

Pathway to Excellence Organizations protect the safety and well-being of nurses, staff, and patients through safety policies and processes. Developed and reviewed by inter-professional collaboration, the safeguards provide mechanisms for monitoring patient and staff safety-related events, as well as professional practice behaviors.

4. Quality

Our nurses are involved in quality collaborations and education throughout the organization. Using organization-wide initiatives that are evidence-based and focused on improving patient outcomes, ECMC demonstrates that the organization continues the Pathway to Excellence. Education has been developed and brought to the frontline team on quality initiatives which include the RN-MD Co-teaching and Pop-up Education to improve patient outcomes.

5. Well-Being

A Pathway to Excellence organization has, as a core component, the appreciation of the need for staff to have work/life balance. Retention committees, serenity room, community outreach projects, and flexible scheduling are all aspects that contribute to this element here at ECMC. Well-being leads to involved, motivated and confident staff.

6. Professional Development

Pathway to Excellence organizations recognize the importance of staff orientation, collaboration and development in the delivery of safe and effective patient care. Here at ECMC, we realize this important core element; nurses not only receive area-specific orientations but are reimbursed for achieving additional certifications. These include tuition reimbursement, nursing scholarship, clinical ladder and certification reimbursement.
