Thomas C. Mahl, MD

Biography

Dr. Thomas Mahl is the chief of gastroenterology at ECMC, where he oversees and treats a broad range of gastroenterological disorders-particularly those with liver diseases such as hepatitis, alcoholic and non-alcoholic liver disease, cirrhosis, ascites and portosystemic encephalopathy. He and his staff perform upper endoscopy, colonoscopy and paracentesis on patients. His patient-care efforts have included digital outreach: he co-authored an article for the inaugural issue of the patient-oriented online magazine “HCV Next.”

Dr. Mahl is Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University at Buffalo, where he has served on the faculty since 1990. He is also the Gastroenterology Fellowship Program Director at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. From 1990 to 2019, he practiced at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Buffalo as a staff gastroenterologist, and served as chief of the VA’s gastroenterology section until becoming the chief of the department of medicine at the VA from 2000 until 2012.

Dr. Mahl has written numerous publications and has co-authored a book on clinical liver disorders. Dr. Mahl has received numerous awards for teaching and several times been the recipient of the prestigious Siegel Award for Distinguished Teaching given by the School of Medicine. He has several ongoing projects examining the effectiveness of educational methods for teaching gastroenterology to medical students.
