Biography

Dr. William Flynn is an ECMC Associate Medical Director.  In this capacity, he supports the medical director, working on quality projects as well as optimizing operating room safety and efficiency. 

Dr. Flynn formerly served since 2006 as ECMC Chief of Service in the Department of Surgery, directing the Trauma Intensive Care Unit, serving as attending staff surgeon, and interim chair of the Department of Surgery at the State University of New York at Buffalo. In these roles, he brought care to patients at some of the most critical junctures, including after accidents or critical injury.

Dr. Flynn helped ECMC transition from a New York State-designated Trauma Center to an American College of Surgeons (ACS) accredited Level I Trauma Center. In a crowning achievement, Dr. Flynn and his team ensured ECMC had zero deficiencies in ECMC’s most recent ACS survey.

Dr. Flynn has also given back to the hospital and Medical-Dental Staff as a President of ECMC’s Medical-Dental Staff from 2019-2021. Further, Dr. Flynn spearheaded and led the development of ECMC’s Practice Improvement Process.

Dr. Flynn’s experience encompasses decades of clinical work and successful outcomes in trauma, burn care, surgical treatment, and more, including certifications in advanced burn life support, advanced trauma life support, and advanced cardiac life support.

Dr. William Flynn is also Vice-Chair for Clinical Affairs and Associate Professor for the SUNY Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, where he helps train up-and-coming medical talent in the work of critical care.

In addition to his clinical work, he focuses his research and publications on a number of topics related to trauma care.

Dr. William Flynn has earned a number of awards over the course of his career, including being named the Lifeline Distinguished Physician Honoree and the Young Surgeon of the Year Award.
